Twende – Let’s Go! ºoº

I survived my first week at Disney! It has possibly been one of  the longest, most exhausting weeks of my life, but also one of the most amazing as well. Simply put, being here is magical.  Here’s a quick vlog I did as an update on what’s been going on.

I got in to Orlando last Tuesday afternoon and stayed at the Fairfield-Mariott that’s about a mile from Vista Way where you check in. That night I met up with 2 of my roommates that I had met on Facebook for dinner in Downtown Disney, it was great to know some faces for the next morning. I met up with Sara, my roommate, a little before 8 at Vista Way the next morning to check in. I highly recommend coming to check in early! They weren’t supposed to start letting us in until nine, but I guess they were ahead of schedule because they opened at eight! Whether it was because we were at the front of the line or because our check-in group was so small the paperwork/housing process really only took about an hour. Then we had about an hour to go to our apartment, only enough time to get some stuff out of the car, before we were whisked off to Casting! Again Sara and I somehow managed to get in the front of the line and Casting took about another hour and a half or so.

The first thing they do is tell you where you are assigned to work. The guy came up to me and said, “Ah, you’re working where I started when I first came here!” So immediately my heart sank thinking it would be some not-as-fun attraction that’s foolproof. But then he told me I would be working at KILIMANJARO SAFARIS!!! I literally freaked out in the casting line, meaning I screamed.. well it was a little more like a cut-off, can’t breathe type scream. But he assured me that was normal around here, and even encouraged! After that is was just more paperwork, fingerprinting for background checks, getting some paperwork, and such. Then we got to go back to our apartment for another couple of hours before a housing meeting. It was about two hours long, but by this point we had been up since 6 AM, given so so so much information, and were so overwhelmed with just everything I honestly barely remember anything about it. That night my parents drove over from New Smyrna where we had been staying to go to dinner, see the apartment and stock the fridge! It was a hard goodbye.

Speaking of apartments, I have  3 bedroom apartment in Patterson Court that I share with 5 other girls. They are all amazing! Sara shares a room with me, she’s from Kentucky and is working merchandise at the Emporium on Main Street USA. Nicole is from Oklahoma and is working as a character attendant mainly in Animal Kingdom with me! Her roommate is Jessica from Maryland who works merchandise at strollers at the Magic Kingdom entrance. Janna is from Indiana and works as a hostess at the Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom and her roommate is Stella from New York works quick service food and beverage in the Magic Kingdom as well!

Friday Sara, Janna and I were assigned the early Traditions class which means we had to leave the room to walk to the bus at 6:15 AM. It started at 8 and lasted until 12:30, the beginning was a little slow but it turned out to be a pretty awesome experience. The best part was when we got to walk through the utilidoors, aka the tunnels underneath Magic Kingdom. The Boss (Mickey, by the way) came by to say hello to us and deliver are beautiful new name tags! After you go through Traditions you can then get into the parks for free so we headed over to EPCOT to ride some rides and then over to Magic Kingdom to catch the Wishes fireworks show. The next night we went out as a room to Hollywood Studios until it closed at 7 and then back to EPCOT to have some Mexican food and watch Illuminations: Reflections of Earth. Both of those shows were so magical.

Working at Animal Kingdom has been amazing so far. If you know me at all you probably know how much of an outdoor person I am and how much I love animals. It is a perfect fit, me working there. It has its perks as well, being that the park normally closes at 5 PM and even during extra magic hours the safari will never stay open past dusk. I started training on Monday and it has been amazing so far! I drove the jeep through the safari yesterday with my trainer and began working on my spiel. Its a lot to think about between driving, talking, and making sure guests see the animals but I couldn’t be happier!

Wow.. that was a load of information.. I’ll update again soon as things progress. Make sure to come visit me!

Kwa Herini – Bye Everyone!

Been a While

So it’s only been.. forever since I updated everything. Here’s the latest Vlog!

I’ve been asked a few more questions on my formspring. Please, keep them coming! I’d love to answer any and all questions.

I have an ankle tattoo which I know I would have to cover. But is this going to be a big problem with Disney? I know it gets really hot in the summer and am worried about covering it up when wearing shorts or skirts.
Tattoos are not a huge problem with Disney, the only thing is they cannot be showing while you are working there. An ankle tattoo is probably one of the easiest to deal with, you will most likely just have to wear socks that cover it up when you work. To quote the woman who spoke at my presentation, she said “You can have your whole body tattooed and still work at Disney, just be prepared to wear a uniform with long sleeves and pants!”

Follow-up to an earlier question: Are there any other places in Magic Kingdom you would consider working? I work in Main Street Operations, which is classified under Attractions and includes Parade Audience Control. It’s a blast! Sweet costume too.
I think the only rides I’d really like to work at MK would be Pirates, Space Mountain, and the Jungle Cruise. Possibly Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Mountain. These are really the only ones that appeal to me, for one reason or another. Sounds like working Parade Control there would be a lot of fun!

I got both my “See you real soon!” (2 week notice email) and my “You’re Almost Here!” (1 week notice email) within 24 hours of each other. Disney makes me laugh. But it did talk about how you should dress for moving in and so I thought I’d highlight that here. When moving it Disney does state that you must follow the Disney Look, however on this day they only require you to comply with the hairstyle, hair coloring, fingernail, piercing, tattoos, and facial hair (for men). So you can pretty much wear whatever clothing you’d like so long as it isn’t too revealing. Jeans, shorts, flip flops, tank tops, etc. are perfectly acceptable on this day. Realize this is Florida, odds are you will be standing outside for extended periods of time, so dress light and I’d suggest bringing a water bottle and maybe some snacks as well.

As a side note, I was starting to pack for Disney and, when trying to pack business-style clothing, realized I didn’t really know what I should take and also realized (through the Facebook group) that some changes have been made to the woman’s business Disney Look. I didn’t want to risk someone giving me bad information on Facebook so I went on a hunt to find it on Disney’s site. This proved impossible until I just Googled some random things until I found it! Anyway, all that to say, if you would like a link to the Disney Look business attire section, for women, here you go. In comparing that to the post I actually made about the Disney Look a few months ago I noticed some changes have been made.

1.You can now wear sleeveless shirts and dresses as long as the sleeve width is at least 3 inches wide, but tank tops, spaghetti straps, and other casual-style shirts are still not acceptable. (before no sundresses were allowed at all)
2. You can now wear “traditional and professional style” mid-calf capri pants, but other more causal style capris are not allowed. (before it was either skirts or pants)
3. Jackets and coats for Winter must be of business-acceptable fabrics like wool, leather, and micro fiber. (not sure if this was here before, but I didn’t have it posted so there you go)
and the biggest news of all..
4. Hosiery is no longer required!! The old rule was that anytime your legs were showing you had to wear hose whenever your legs were showing, it is now optional. If you choose to wear them, however, they muse be sheer or opaque.

Also, here is a slightly revised version of my packing list. Some things are pretty specific to me, but it may help some people. Anything marked with an astrix (*) is something I will be buying when I get down there.

Edited – 8/27/2010

Finally, a vlog!

Come tomorrow I will have been at camp for one month! I honestly can not believe it.. It has flown by yet I feel like I’ve been here forever. Camp tends to work in dog years, one week here makes you feel like you’ve been here for seven. The people here are so great, I’ve met people from all over the world and made some wonderful friends. This is just a short Vlog I managed to make the other day. Really its just me talking about camp and such, but if you’re looking for an update have a watch. 🙂

The Campers are Here!

So, obviously I got my first group of campers this week! They arrived by car and bus on Monday, largely from the Chicago area. It was a whirlwind of activity getting them all unpacked and set up. There are seventeen eleven year olds in my cabin! Between me, my co counselor (Rachel), our jc (Megan) and our cit (JJ) we’re able to keep them in line fairly well. I really love my girls. They’re pretty insane at times, but also funny. My cabin is a-mazing! I took a few pictures so I’ll try to give you a mini photo tour of camp.

This is the sign you see upon entering Lake of the Woods camp. The camp grounds are as beautiful and spacious as can be. Everywhere you look is green and now crawling with campers. During the day its normally in the mid to high 80s and not too humid (its nothing compared to Georgia) and it gets quite cool in the mornings and evenings (if you’re not in your cabin.. with no A/C its a solid 10* hotter in there.. And on the left is the Big White House where the main office is and where I’m typing this from.

This is the climbing wall where I teach 8 different climbing classes (4 every day). It’s about 45 ft tall and tThere are 12 different routes on the wall (six on the front and six on the back), two high ropes elements, a giant swing, and a zip line. During climbing training I did the zip line about 5 times and the giant swing seven times. I can safely say they are tons of fun! Our climbing classes are fairly large, normally around 20 kids except for our Glen/Grove classes which are closer to 30 kids. There are 10 people on the climbing staff and all of them are pretty amazing!

Here are some pictures of the cabins where I’m currently living at The Glen.

This is the back side of my cabin.

I’m in the Vanderbilt cabin. During the Glen the cabins are named after Ivy League schools. During the Grove they’re named for Big 10 football teams.

This is my bed area. Its not much but it’s pretty comfortable.

This is the counselor “area”. It’s looking over Rachel’s bed then it goes Me, JJ, and Megan from left to right. We don’t believe in personal space any more.

This is the cabin area. 16 bunk beds and a single all in this area. Believe it or not this was before any campers actually arrived. We had to unpack over half of our campers and make their beds before they got here! Madness..

This is our bathroom. There are only two showers, two sinks, and two bathroom stalls for 21 people. Now that is crazy.

And this is Spence, she’s from the UK. When shown a picture my campers say she looks more like my sister than my actual sister does. I have to say I agreed..

Well, that’s really all I have time for. I just finished teaching a climbing class and throwing kids off a 45 ft. tower, aka the Zip Line. Loads of fun! Gotta go wash up then head on to dinner and PANIC! tonight. I’m still not sure exactly when that is.. I have a night off Friday so if I can find a quiet-ish spot I might try to get a blog done. I had some video of my trip to Chicago but apparently Windows Movie Maker does not like the format in which my camera does video. Geez.. I did get to talk to my parents last night, they are absolutely loving their cruise. They get back into Washington on Saturday so I’m excited to hear all about it. I’ll try and get a hosting site and get some more pictures up soon. Until next time.

One Week Down, Eight to Go

Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve said anything to everyone, it’s been a whirlwind of activity in my world for the last while. One week ago I got to the Chicago-O’Hare Airport around 2:30 and after a few hours wait where I was unable to find any of the people I was supposed to meet up with I caught the bus to Camp! It was about a 3 hour ride on a charter bus with only about 15 other people, pretty awesome.

Friday and Saturday were spent on the climbing wall training. There are 12 climbing staff, all of whom are pretty awesome people if I do say so. The wall is great, 12 climbs in all about 45 ft., a giant swing, and a zip line. Training is loads of fun because we just had to climb the wall and zip over and over again. Those two days it was in the high 80s and pretty hot and I got a great sunburn on my shoulders and the back of my legs. Its peeling now. Wonderous.

Saturday night the international kids arrived but luckily I got to go out and spend the evening with Greg, a nice dinner and such, was really great. He had knee surgery yesterday which was successful they say. Hopefully won’t be too long until I get to see him again.

This whole week has been training and preparing camp for Monday when the campers come. All the people have been wonderful and the food is pretty good too! All in all a great place, and its beautiful. Not going to lie though, I wore my Creek pants this morning and silently chanted “C-R-EE-K, You know you wanna be a Creek someday” in my head. I miss all my friends and WinShape and Sock War and such, but this place has made me feel right at home already.

Tomorrow we find out who our co-counselors are and get to move into our cabins, which is beyond exciting! We get almost all Saturday off and that will be pretty nice as well. Well, I have to run and take a swim test in the lake and then dinner. My parents are on their Alaskan Cruise and I’m sure they’re having a marvelous time. Hope everyone is doing well!

Random-ness

So I got really bored after getting a hair cut today, decided to vlog about some random things about me. I have less than 24 hours now until I take off for Michigan!! I’m so excited! Doing a lot of laundry and cleaning today to get everything ready. I can’t wait!!

Hm… vlogging.

So.. I might start sticking to vlogging. It’s harder to break copyright laws when its just you talking. Also kinda more fun than writing posts. 🙂

View, comment, subscribe, ask questions!

For those of you who don’t want to watch it, here’s the questions and answers:

Who is your favorite princess?
I was never really into Disney princesses when I was little, I was more of a Lion King and 101 Dalmatians fan, but if I had to choose one I’d pick Belle. I really like that whole story and everything.

Where don’t you want to work?
I can’t honestly say there’s anywhere I don’t want to work at Disney, I feel pretty darn lucky that I’m getting to work there in the first place so I can’t be choosy. If I had to say though it would probably have to be anything in the Magic Kingdom. I don’t really want to be placed at something like Dumbo or Aladdin’s  Carpet Ride or Tea Cups or anything. The only two things I think I would want to work in MK are Pirates or Jungle Cruise.

What is your favorite ride?
Definitely between Space Mountain and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. The few times I’ve been to Disney these two are the rides that have stuck in my memory beyond anything else. I have vague memories of other rides but I remember these two just being so very awesome. I mean, cmon, roller coaster in the dark!!

Do your shoulders have to be covered at check in?
You do need to have your shoulders covered because your Disney photo ID will be taken this day, otherwise you can pretty much wear whatever. Flip flops, shorts, etc.

Where do you want to live?
I want to live in either Chatham or Patterson. I’ve just heard that Vista Way is really more party-centric and typically noisier than the other two. I’m driving down so Patterson not having a bus stop isn’t a big deal for me. Chatham would probably be ideal, its said to be the happy medium between loud Vista and really quiet Patterson.

When did you apply for the DCP?
I was really late in applying. I found out about the program on March 27th after looking around online. I watched an e-presentation on the 29th and then when I looked at the school presentation schedule the presentation at my school was the next day! The time slot was perfectly fitted between two of my classes, so I kinda figured it was fate! I went to that (I highly recommend it over the e-presentation) and that night when I got home I did the online interview and role checklist. A week later, April 7th, I had my phone interview and then only 6 days later on the 13th I got my invitation to work attractions!

What is the airspeed velocity of a laden swallow?
… African or European?

Bored CP + Urge to doodle =’s

Not a huge fan of how Simba came out but oh well. Drawn in pencil, outlined in ink, colored in photoshop. Ok kids, that’s all for now. Only6 days left until camp! Whoooooooo!

A Call for Questions!

Ask me your questions! I’d love to do a Q&A Vlog which means I need questions to answer! Leave a comment here, on my YouTube video/channel, twitter, formspring, or even email! (links in the sidebar) Tell me what you want to know!

Frequently, and I Mean Frequently, Asked Questions

*Note– If you didn’t notice I have a new page up top with a photo challenge that I’m going to try and complete during my time at Disney. Its pretty fun, so check it out and use it if you’re interested!

Discovery of the week is this pretty awesome blogger/vlogger who’s going down Fall Advantage. Her name is Abby and she has a great informational blog and some pretty awesome vlogs so check her out.

Well it’s Memorial Day Weekend. My parents are up in DC and coincidentally my sister is also driving up there for the long weekend. So I’m at home with Reagan (our dog) who is having a nervous breakdown because everyone is gone and I’m packing for camp. He has become my furry, four-legged shadow. I had a wonderful sushi dinner Thursday night with Katie Clenney and Kari Hall. It’s great to get to see old friends. 🙂 On the not so bright side of things my car won’t start. The problems are just non stop with that thing lately. Hoping its just the battery, honestly it needs a new one anyway.

A few days ago I emailed DCP recruiting to put in my request for where I’d like to work this Fall. I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I had pretty much decided I didn’t really want to work in Magic Kingdom. Even though its the quintessential Disney park I really wanted to be in one of the other ones. However most people know I have this ridiculous love for all things pirate, so I asked to be placed at Pirates of the Caribbean or at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster or Hollywood Studios in general. I haven’t been to Hollywood Studios since it was called MGM, but I have very vivid memories of riding that awesome 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, music blaring, twists and turns every way imaginable ride.. So those were my two requests. Naturally I got the canned response that they noted where I wold like to work in my file but I am not guaranteed anything. Placement is based upon the needs of the parks when you arrived, but they try and take requests into account. If you have somewhere you’d really like to work just email recruiting at wdw.college.recruiting@disney.com

Quick informational update: We got a report from a current CP-er that there has been a change made to the Disney Look on the HUB which is really only for women. Before the look said you could not wear sundresses or any pants that weren’t full length but now they have decided that business style capris and sleeveless tops/dresses with straps at least 3 inches wide/ in good taste are acceptable. You can also wear sling backs with an open toe now.

So, I’ve had some down time while waiting for camp, it’s like torture, but I’ve been making the best of it by reading informative blogs and such by DCP students who just arrived. The first batch of Fall Advantage kids got in on the 19th and the second on 24th, so there has been an abundance of information and questions flying on blogs and Facebook groups. I’m going to save most of the big arrival information for a post right before I leave for camp because, lets face it, when I get back on August 22nd 98% of people will already be at Disney. I did notice that a lot of people kept asking the same questions so I’ve compiled them into a little FAQ. If I missed anything that you want to know just leave a question in the comments or formspring me and I’ll do my best to get you an answer!

Frequently Asked Questions:
Can you change your arrival date?
If you are Fall Advantage it is probably too late to change your date now, however I have heard of Fall arrivals emailing recruiting and requesting a different date and having it get accepted.

When you drive to check into Vista Way is there a place to park?
There is a lot right across the street from Vista Way which you can park in, then everyone gathers at the security gate inside. If the lot fills up, there is a Wendy’s and gas station maybe 200 feet from the complex.

What do you with the luggage while waiting for them to open and while you’re in the check-in process if you didn’t drive?
Once the gate opens, you have to go to the back of Vista, that’s where the check-in booth is. Behind the booth is a huge tent for luggage. They have a security guy standing there, so it’s in safe hands while you check in. Also, for those taking a cab or other transportation, they drop of right at the check in booth, so you wont have to walk all the way through vista.

Is there a way to request a roommate before we go?
Yes, you can request a roommate through the roommate notification system online.

If you arrive together can you can you request more than one roommate?
If there are more than 2 of you you can sign up with more people to room with, but you can only fill up 50% of an apartment with requests or 100%. So if there are 4 of you who want to live together you have to either take a 2 or 4 bedroom apartment. If there are three of you who want to live together you have to take a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment, its just how Disney does things.

I keep reading that if you have a roommate you both need to arrive at check in at the same time, does this still apply if you request your roommate through the online matching system?
From my understanding, if you & your roommate do the roommate matching thing, you don’t have to get to check in at the same time because it’s in the computer system that the two of you are going to be roommates.

If you got matched with someone through Disney, do you have to room with them?
No, you can go to the DCP website and cancel the match before your arrival date.

What if you don’t have a roommate? What do you do then?
You get assigned one, unless you happen to meet someone in line you get along with and sign up together.

Are the beds Twin or Twin XL?
Twin.

I know that they say the Rooms are Fully Furnished…But do we need to bring like Microwaves/TV?
There are microwaves in the kitchens, but you will need to bring a TV if you want one. There is cable hookup in the rooms.

Is there a place to plug in an ethernet cable?
Yes, but in most places the only one is in the living room, the exception being Patterson where there is one in every room. I recommended having one of the roommates bring a wireless router.

Can we bring a mini-fridge?
No, they are not allowed.

Can we bring bed risers for our room?
Yes, you can.

Did you get to pick if you wanted the 8 am or 2 pm traditions class?
No, they assign a session to you. If you’re there early in the morning, you will have the 8am, if you arrive in the afternoon you will probably get 2pm. Just depends on how quickly they fill up.

Where is traditions at? Can you take a cab or drive there instead of waiting for the bus?
Traditions is at Disney university behind Magic Kingdom. The wait for the bus isn’t very long, and driving is not recommended because you don’t have your Disney ID’s yet, so you wouldn’t be able to get through the parking gates, also, when you get off the bus, you are all together as a group.

During traditions when they take you on the walk through the Magic Kingdom, are you allowed to change shoes? Because walking on heels all through MK sounds awful!
Unfortunately, no. You have to stay in your Disney Look, so I would recommend wearing comfortable dress shoes and something that won’t be too hot.

Do all women follow the “Hosiery must be worn at all times” Disney Look rule?
If your legs are showing nylons are necessary.

What are the different uniforms like?
Uniforms vary greatly by your position, and are largely still around because they are a part of the Disney experience and are definitely not designed for the appearance. Here’s a great forum with lots of pictures of different costumes here.

When we use our Disney ID to get friends discounts while we’re there, is there a limit on that?
5 times a year is the limit on the friends/family discount. But you can use your discount on rooms, food, and merchandise an unlimited amount of times.

And now, because I can, here are some bizarre facts and oddities about Disney!

1. Walt’s Apartment

Because Walt wanted to ensure that everything would be as magical as possible when Disneyland was being built in the early 50s, he had an apartment built in the theme park, which was an hour from where he lived in California. Employees would know when he was in the apartment, above the fire station on Main Street USA, when the light was on in the window at night. To this day, more than 45 years after his death, a light is left on in the window in his memory and supposedly the room has been left untouched since he passed away. Perhaps Mickey’s Ears are not the only things you could ever see at Disneyland.

2. Fatal Rides

There have been about a dozen deaths in Disneyland California since the park opened in 1955 while there have been at least as many at Disney World and at least one at the Paris Disneyland. Some of these fatalities were due to adverse reactions from the guests, but many of the deaths were the fault of the guests who were not heeding directions. When they say don’t stand up in a roller coaster, there’s a reason.

3. It’s a Big, Big Walt Disney World

Located entirely within its own improvement district – the Reedy Creek Improvement District of Lake Buena Vista, Fla. – Walt Disney World with its main attractions and resorts is twice the size of Manhattan. Every day, the guests of the resorts use an amount of linens that would take a normal person 40 years to clean. Supposedly the landscaping crew puts over a half a million miles on the mowers covering the 47 miles of WDW throughout the year. In the last seven years, a water saving effort has taken place at the theme parks, which has meant a savings of about 2.5 billion gallons of water. Who said it was a “small, small world?”

4. The Vault

Included in that rigid control of their trademarks is the vaunted Disney Vault. Disney started theatrically re-releasing movies seven years after they were originally released after “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.” Since then, the home movie craze hit and with the advent of DVDs, the Vault is only reopened once every 10 years. Supposedly this is a ploy to get new generations of children interested in the movies. Or like any business, it could just be a way to make more money.

5.  DDD

Talk about keeping quiet. Disney employees are expressly prohibited from dating other Disney employees – hence Don’t Date Disney. A former employee of Disneyland let the cat out of the bag on that policy years ago when he tattled to “LA Magazine” about his time as Jack Sparrow. Unfortunately, someone took a photo of him and his then girlfriend, an Ariel, and showed it to the higher ups, who were displeased. However, it was going to the premiere of “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” doing an interview in costume, giving his full name, and the interview being posted online that got his Ears taken away.

At the same time, park employees are discouraged from trying to “excite” members of the opposite sex and to ignore any flirtation from guests. Tough luck, Jack, no lasses or goatee for you!

6. Facial Hair

Back in the 60s, long hair and facial hair was considered to be a sign of hippies, which the empire could not afford to be associated with. Hence a policy was born requiring all male employees to have short hair and no facial hair at the theme parks. It took until 2000 for the theme parks to renege on the policy. Now male employees are allowed to have neatly trimmed mustaches.

7. Hidden Ears

Whether you’re at Disneyland or any of the other theme parks, everywhere you look there are Mickey Mouse Ears. And no, not the merchandise ears. From the shape of the pizza to the hedges to the ears hidden in the tiles, Mickey’s iconic ears are everywhere thanks to Walt’s desire to add to the magic of the kingdom.

That’s all I’ve got for now. Next time I’m going to talk about packing, the how-tos and the do-nots, some helpful tips and my packing list in case anyone wanted to get some ideas from it or use it. Until then Happy Memorial Day and thank you to all our soldiers who have given and are giving their lives for our freedom.
